The 1960 - 1969 American Football League (AFL) receiver who was known as Bambi was Lance Dwight Alworth, aka Lance Alworth. During his professional career as a football player, his slender build, speed, grace, and leaping ability earned him the nickname "Bambi". He is a former American football player who was a wide receiver for the San Diego Chargers of the American Football League (1962–1970). He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys (1971–1972). He played eleven seasons during his entire career. In 1978, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Born in Houston, Texas, Alworth was raised in Hog Chain, Mississippi. He played high school football at Brookhaven High School. While in school, he earned 15 letters for his sport activities. After high school, Alworth was offered contracts to play professional baseball by the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He decided to attend the University of Arkansas. At Arkansas, the six-foot, 180-pound, Alworth was a flanker and punt returner.

In 1962, Alworth was picked in Round One as the number 8 selection in the NFL draft. In the same year in the AFL draft, he was picked in Round Two as the 9th selection. He started his career in the AFL. He was able to retire from professional football with 543 receptions for 10,266 yards. He also rushed for 129 yards, returned 29 punts for 309 yards, gained 216 yards on 10 kickoff returns, and scored 87 touchdowns (85 receiving and 2 rushing).
