Released in 2003, the American romantic comedy crime film ‘Gigli’, starred Ben Affleck (born 1972) and Jennifer Lopez (born 1969) along with Justin Bertha (born 1978), Al Pacino (born 1940), Christopher Walken (born 1943) and Lainie Kazan (born 1940). Because Lopez and Affleck were romantically involved at the time, popular media gave attention and interest to the film during production.

In spite of this all star cast and the couples’ romantic relationship, the film received a critical reaction that was universally negative. In the years since its release the movie has been considered one of the worst films of all time. Called a box office bomb, it had a budget of $75.6 million, grossing only $7.2 million at the box office.

The film’s title was lampooned by the media. One example was the American television night time talk show host Conan O’Brien’s (born 1963) comment, “The Mets (American baseball team) are doing so badly that they will be renamed ‘The New York Gigli’”.

‘Yahoo! Movies’ rates ‘Gigli’ number one on their ‘Bottom Rated Movies of All Time’ with a critic’s rating of D-. Another satirical newspaper ‘The Onion’, ran an article about the film, titled “Gigli focus groups demand new ending in which Affleck and Lopez die.”

On ‘Rotten Tomatoes’, an American review aggregation website, the film received an approval rating of 6% based on 187 reviews. The site’s critical consensus reads, “Bizarre and clumsily plotted, ‘Gigli’ is a mess.”
