‘Bettlejuice’ was a 1988 American fantasy comedy film directed by Tim Burton (born 1958) and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. As the film begins, viewers learn that a recently deceased couple played by Alec Baldwin (born 1958) and Geena Davis (born 1956), become ghosts haunting their former home. They are joined by an obnoxious, devious ‘poltergeist’ (German- for “loud ghost” or “noisy spirit”) named Betelgeuse, pronounced and occasionally spelled Beetlejuice in the film.

The poltergeist is played by Michael Keaton (born 1951), an American actor who has been active in films since 1975. Throughout the film, Keaton tries to scare away the new inhabitants that include a husband, wife and daughter played by Jeffrey Jones (born 1946), Catherine O’Hara (1954), and Winona Ryder (1971), respectively.

The film runs for 92 minutes and was a critical and commercial success, grossing USD $73.8 million from a budget of USD $15 million. It won the Academy Award for Best Makeup at the 61st Academy Awards, shared by the trio of makeup artists Steve La Porte, Ve Neil, and Robert Short.

Also, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominated ‘Beetlejuice’ for Best Visual Effects and Makeup at the 42nd British Academy Film Awards.‘Beetlejuice’ also won the Saturn Award, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, for Best Horror Film and Best Make-up.
