‘Underwater” is a 2020 American science fiction action horror film directed by William Eubank (born 1982). It follows a group of researchers working on a Tian Industries drilling facility at the bottom of the ocean who encounter hostile creatures after a violent earthquake at the bottom of the Mariana Trench destroys the facility. The 95 minute film is loosely based on the Cthulhu Mythos, as it features Cthulhu and the Deep Ones as the antagonists.

The Cthuhu Mythos is a mythopoeia and a shared fictional universe, originating in the works of the American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937). The name Cthulhu derives from the central creature in his seminal short story, ‘The Call of Cthulu’, first published in the pulp magazine ‘Weird Tales’ in 1928.

The plot finds the team trying to escape the ocean bed, only to face monsters beyond their wildest imaginations. The film stars American actress Kristen Stewart (born 1990), French actor Vincent Cassel (born 1966), British actress and writer Jessica Henwick (born 1992), American actor and musician John Gallagher Jr. (born 1984), Mauritanian-American actor Mamoudou Athie (birth unknown), and American actor T.J. Miller (born 1981).

The film was the last 20th Century film to be released under the 20th Century Fox name, before its new owner, The Walt Disney Company, changed the name of the studio to 20th Century Studios.
