Which battle is depicted in the 1964 film Zulu?

"This motion picture was the main film debut of Michael Caine, a renowned and required British actor." What does this sentence mean? First, can an actor have more than one film debut to make this the "main debut"? Second, what does it mean to be a "required actor"? My guesses are that Zulu was the FEATURE film debut of Michael Caine, a renowned and ADMIRED British actor.

As someone living in South Africa that was easy. However, in true Hollywood style there are numerous errors - the movie was not shot at Rorke's drift, it was not at that time the South Wales Borderers (they were the 24 (2 Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot)and were only renamed some years later so only 5 Jones's and one of them was not Welsh and there was no singing. The number of VCs was 6 but in one case there was not have the happiest of endings as ex Private Robert Jones committed suicide 6 months later. However, it does remain one of the most remarkable defences of a position bearing in mind what happened at Isandlwana. Saul David's book "Zulu" gives a very detailed account of that Battle plus that earlier of Isandlwana and there are other examples of Hollywood getting it wrong insofar as Rorke's Drift is concerned.

Was easy - had to be either Rorke's Drift or Isandlwana which my Dad's grandfather survived. Isandlwana did not come up.

I joined up Zulu Dawn and Zulu without the ending or starting credits on either movie and added the closing credits at the end of Zulu credits.

Just my favourite film of all time...happy memories of watching it with my Dad and younger brother.
