Daley Thompson, real name Francis Morgan Ayodélé Thompson (born 1958), is a former British decathlete who won a gold medal and broke the World Record in the decathlon at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984, and at the European Championships in 1982. A decathalon is a sporting event consisting of ten track and field events.

Thompson first set the world decathlon record at the 1980 Olympics in Götzis, Austria, with 8,648 points. In 1982, he beat his record with 8,730 points, and again with 8,774 points at the European Championships in Athens. He was the first decathlete to hold the European, World and Olympic title simultaneously.

In 1984, Thompson beat the World Record for a fourth time with 8,847 points at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He remained the world record holder until 1992, when American athlete Dan O'brien beat him with a score of 8,891.

Thompson was forced to retire in 1992 due to a hamstring injury. During the 1990s, he briefly played football (soccer) for Mansfield Town and Reading Football Club.

Daley Thompson was born in Notting Hill, London, to a British Nigerian father and Scottish mother. He had a troubled childhood and when he was eleven or twelve, his father was shot dead in Streatham, London. To escape his troubles, Thompson's aimed to become a professional footballer, but he later switched his interests to athletics.
