Which category of food does a banana fall into?
Botanically speaking the banana is a berry, and it grows on a plant that's a herb (not a tree). Bananas grow pointing upwards, not downwards. Each banana plant produces only one ‘bunch’ of bananas and then dies. However, that bunch may weigh up to 50 kilos.
They are derived from a single flower with more than one ovary, making them an aggregate fruit. True berries are simple fruits stemming from one flower with one ovary and typically have several seeds. Tomatoes fall into this group, as do pomegranates, kiwis and—believe it or not—bananas.
