In 'Noggin and The Moon Mouse' (1967), one of a series of stories about a simple, kind king by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, an alien spacecraft crashed down in the middle of the town. This was the first appearance of a Clanger, a mouse-like creature who lives inside a small moon-like planet. In 1969, the year of the first moon landing, the BBC commissioned a children's series based in space. Using their 'Moon Mouse' as inspiration, Firmin and Postgate created the stop-motion series 'The Clangers'.

The Clangers are peculiar creatures that speak in a whistled language. They eat blue string pudding and green soup, which is delivered from a volcano by the Soup Dragon. In every episode of 'The Clangers', the mouse-like creatures had a problem to solve, whether it be inventing machines to make their lives easier or welcoming new inhabitants to the planet. To protect themselves from meteorites, they place metal dustbin lids over the craters, which make a clanging sound when struck, hence the name 'The Clangers'.

The original twenty-six episodes were broadcast on BBC1 between 1969 and 1972. The show was later revived in 2015 with 'Monty Python' actor Michael Palin as the narrator. That year, 'The Clangers' (or 'Clangers' as the show is now known) won a BAFTA (British Academy Film Award) in the Best Pre-School Animation category. The series has won several other awards since its revival and is mostly written by Postgate's son, Daniel.
