Orion is a constellation named after the hunter of the same name in Greek mythology. The constellation contains ten stars that appear to form the shape of a man holding a bow and wearing a belt. Two of the brightest stars in the sky, Rigel and Betelgeuse, are located in the Orion constellation.

The constellation of Orion is one of the brightest, containing numerous bright stars, nebulae, and star clusters. The three stars visible in Orion's belt are Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka, two of which are supergiants. These stars are large enough to emit enough light to traverse the lightyears between themselves and Earth. One light-year is the distance that light travels in a single year, which is about 6 trillion miles (9 trillion kilometres). Betelgeuse, a red giant and one of the largest stars known to man, is approximately 642 light-years away.

In Greek mythology, Orion is a hunter who is often accompanied by his dogs, Sirius and Procycon. He lived in Boeotia and Crete but his parentage is debated. Some stories claim he is the son of the god Poseidon and the gorgon Euryale, but others say he has three fathers, the gods Poseidon, Zeus and either Hermes or Ares. From Zeus, he inherited his craving for erotic adventures, and from Poseidon, he got the ability to walk on water.
