The tiny remote fishing town of Henningsvær, Norway, used to be just another seaside hamlet until the village built a world-famous ocean-side soccer pitch.

As of 2018, the 0.3 km2 (74-acre) village had a population of 510. The village itself is spread across several small islands which are connected by bridges; however, most of it is located on two islands: Heimøya and Hellandsøya.

Tourists have long been drawn to Henningsvær by its traditional fishing architecture and outdoor activities like climbing, diving, and snorkeling. However, the pitch quickly became a tourist attraction in its own right, and the focal point of the village. The venue attracts tourists from around the world, whether to watch a match, play a game of pickup, or just take in the breathtaking views. Football has replaced fishing as the activity for which Henningsvær is best known.

Besides games, tourism, and appearing in Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) commercials, the pitch has another important use: local youths train and play on the field. Local adults gather there also, to drink coffee, chat, and watch the young players.

Floodlights were installed to facilitate night matches and play during the dark winter months. During the summer months the pitch can be used up to 24 hours a day, thanks to the never-setting sun in this part of Norway.

Day or night, whatever the season, few football settings offer a better opportunity to play the beautiful game in equally beautiful surroundings.
