Tiana is the main character in the 2009 Disney film 'The Princess and the Frog'. It is loosely based on E.D. Baker’s novel 'The Frog Princess' as well as the Grimm's fairy tale 'The Frog Prince'.

Tiana is Disney's first African American princess. The film writers originally gave her the French name "Madeleine" ("Maddy" for short), but various sources pointed out that the name "Maddy" was once used as a slave name. The writers decided to change her name to the Greek name "Tiana". It is a portmanteau of the Greek names for princesses, "Τία" and "Νταϊάνα".

'The Princess and the Frog' takes place in 1920s New Orleans, Louisiana. Tiana is a 19-year-old waitress who dreams of owning her own restaurant. After kissing a prince who has been turned into a frog by an evil witch doctor, Tiana becomes a frog herself and must find a way to turn back into a human.

Anika Noni Rose (born 1972) is the voice of Tiana, who sometimes goes by the nickname "Tia". Rose won the Best Song and Best Voice Performance categories at the 2009 Black Reel Awards.
