West Bromwich Albion (often known just as West Brom) is a football team from the English midlands, currently (January 2022) playing in the second tier, known as the Championship. Their nickname is "The Baggies".

They are a very old club, founded in 1878. Originally their nickname was just "The Albion", and later, around the turn of the century, they became known as "The Throstles" - this is a dialect word for "thrush", and these birds were often to be seen in the woods around their new stadium, "The Hawthorns", where they still play.

Now, however, "The Baggies" is their generally accepted nickname. There are various explanations for this. Some have suggested that it relates to the baggy shorts players wore at the time, but that applied to all teams, and wasn't specific to West Brom. A perhaps more convincing explanation is that it relates to the men with large bags who originally collected the gate money. It also seems likely that their local rivals, Aston Villa, may have had a hand in it!
