The Taj Mahal, meaning "Crown of the Palaces", is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra.

It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (reigned from 1628 to 1658), to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan, the builder. The tomb is the centerpiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall.

Construction of the mausoleum was essentially completed in 1643 but work continued on other phases of the project for another 10 years. The Taj Mahal complex is believed to have been completed in its entirety in 1653 at a cost estimated at the time to be around 32 million rupees, which in 2015 would be approximately 52.8 billion rupees (U.S. $827 million). The construction project employed some 20,000 artisans under the guidance of a board of architects led by the court architect to the emperor, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.

Julie Allen, I've had questions refused by the reviewers (it only takes 5 or 6 reviewers to block your question for it to be refused) for: In one, the picture had a woman with a cigarette in her hand, and that caused outrage with some reviewers; In another, asking who sang a certain song, some reviewers didn't like the song, so blocked the question. And yet, inane nonsense from David Wilkes and Carol Whites gets passed time and time again by the petty reviewers. If other authors have the same problems that I have getting questions passed, then no wonder this kindergarten rubbish from Wilkes and Whites (if these people are real) is the norm now.

Johnny Rock, if it's so clever why do more than 98% get it right. There's an obvious flaw. Wilkes and Whites shoud be limited in questions allowed as long as more than 90 Percent get the answers right.

Shah Jahan planned for his own mausoleum to be built on the north bank of the Yamuna, directly opposite the Taj Mahal. It was to be in black marble. Before it could be built, the emperor's son placed him under house arrest in the Red Fort of Agra, with a wonderful view of the Taj Mahal but without the ability to wield power over his empire.
