The 1958 film which is a comedy about a dim-wit hayseed who nearly destroys the U.S. Air Force is titled "No Time for Sergeants". It is a comedy film that was directed by Mervyn LeRoy and produced by Mervyn LeRoy and Alex Segal. It stars Andy Griffith as Pvt. Will Stockdale and features Myron McCormick as M/Sgt. Orville C. King, Don Knotts as Cpl. John C. Brown (dexterity tester), and most of the original Broadway cast. Warner Bros. contract player Nick Adams as Pvt. Benjamin B. Whitledge joined the cast as Stockdale's fellow military draftee, as did Murray Hamilton as Irving S. Blanchard. The film was based on a play by Ira Levin inspired by the original novel, 'No Time for Sergeants' (1954) by Mac Hyman. The screenplay in this instance was written by John Lee Mahin.

In the film, Sergeant King thinks backwoods hillbilly-turned-new recruit Will Stockdale (Griffith) might the dumbest private ever to join the U.S. Air Force. When King puts him permanently in charge of the latrines, Stockdale thinks it's a promotion. Somehow, all King's attempts to make Stockdale look foolish backfire, and one of them even finds the sergeant demoted to private by his superiors. Stockdale, meanwhile, squeaks through training, and soon begins wreaking havoc as a guy in a U.S. Air Force military uniform.

"No Time for Sergeants" was a major hit with fans and critics, and was largely responsible for launching the careers of Griffith and Knotts.
