"Rashomon" is a 1950 film which is a harsh story about a murder and rape ambush in the forest. It is told from four different points of view. Brimming with action while incisively examining the nature of truth, "Rashomon" is a fine example of a film that investigates the human philosophy of justice. Through an ingenious use of camera and flashbacks, critics and fans note that director, Akira Kurosawa, reveals the complexities of human nature, as four people recount different versions of the story of a man's murder and the rape of his wife.

"Rashomon" is a period drama where director (Kurosawa) is working in very close collaboration with cinematographer, Kazuo Miyagawa. It was produced by Minoru Jingo and is based on Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's short story of 1922 'In a Grove', which provides film characters and plot. This film's screenplay was written by Kurosawa and Shinobu Hashimoto. Main stars within the film include Toshiro Mifune, Machiko Kyō, Masayuki Mori, and Takashi Shimura.

This is the film which created a plot device where various characters provide clear subjective, self-serving, and contradictory versions of the same incident. Called the Rashomon effect, a situation in which an event is given contradictory interpretations or descriptions, it is named for this 1950 film. "Rashomon" is also the film that marked the entrance of Japanese film onto the world stage. In 1951 and 52, the film won major film awards (Venice Film Festival and a Honorary Academy Award).
