"Shattered Glass" is a 2003 biographical crime drama about a journalist who self-destructs after making up news and public interest articles for 'The New Republic'. The film was written and directed by Billy Ray. The film's screenplay is based on a September 1998 'Vanity Fair' article by H. G. Bissinger. The article chronicles both the rapid mid-1990s rise of Stephen Glass's journalistic career at 'The New Republic' and his steep fall after his widespread journalistic fraud is fully exposed.

In the film young hotshot journalist Stephen Glass (Hayden Christensen) puts on a good show for his adoring editor, Michael Kelly (Hank Azaria). He however admits deep insecurities to his fellow writer, Caitlin Avey (Chloë Sevigny). When Glass begins turning in outrageous stories, his popularity skyrockets, but rival journalist Charles Lane (Peter Sarsgaard) becomes suspicious. Lane is concerned about the factual accuracy of Glass's work. Eventually, he discovers that Glass has been fabricating many of his sources and articles.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in August 2003 before it had a screening at multiple film festivals. Ultimately it received a North American limited release in November 2003. The film, although not a box office success (it lost just under 4 million US dollars), was commended by a limited group of fans and received critical praise from film pundits, with praise going to Christensen and Sarsgaard's performances.
