Alagna met Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu in 1992 when they co-starred in 'La bohème' at the Royal Opera, in 1992. Shortly after Alagna's first wife died, Gheorghiu divorced her husband and got engaged to Alagna. They married in New York in April 1996. They starred in several operas together but divorced in 2013. In 2015, Alagna married his third wife, the Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, who also starred in 'La bohème'.
Although Alagna was born near Paris, his family came from Sicily, Italy. As a teenager, he enjoyed singing pop music in Paris cabarets, but later turned to opera singing. After winning the Luciano Pavarotti Voice Competition, he started to sing professionally in 1988. His first role was Alfredo Germont in Giuseppe Verdi's 'La Traviata', which he sang with the Glyndebourne touring opera.
After making a name for himself, Alagna was asked to sing in opera houses all over the world, including La Scala in Milan, Covent Garden in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. At Covent Garden, he played the role of Romeo in a 1994 production of Charles Gounod's 'Romeo and Juliet'. In 2007, he sang the same role at the Metropolitan Opera, with Anna Netrebko as Juliet. The performance was broadcast into 447 theatres worldwide, reaching about 97,000 people.
