Gerhard "Gerd" Müller (1945-2021) was a German footballer (soccer player) who played for FC Bayern Münich and the West German national team. He was one of the best strikers of his time and set many records, which earned him the nickname 'Bomber der Nation' ('the nation's Bomber'), or more simply, 'Der Bomber'.

Müller joined FC Bayern Münich in 1964 and scored 33 goals in 26 matches during his first season. Between 1965 and 1979, Müller scored 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga matches, a record that is yet to be beaten as of 2021. In 1979, Müller transferred to Ford Lauderdale Strikers in the US-professional league, where he continued to impress with his goalscoring prowess.

Internationally, Müller scored 68 goals in 62 games for West Germany and took part in the 1970 World Cup, 1972 European Championship, and 1974 World Cup. During the two World Cups, Müller scored 14 goals. This record stood until 2006 when it was beaten by Ronaldo.

Müller stopped playing professionally in 1982, after which he suffered from alcoholism. After going through alcohol rehabilitation, FC Bayern Münich gave him a job as the coach of the reserve team.

On 6th October 2015, it was announced that Müller was suffering from Alzheimer's disease. He passed away on 15th August 2021 at a nursing home in Wolfratshausen, Germany, aged 75.
