The popular international TV science-fiction series that is set on Moonbase Alpha is "Space: 1999". "Space: 1999" is a British-Italian science-fiction TV program. It ran for two seasons from 1975 to 1977. In the opening episode, set in the year 1999, nuclear waste stored on the Moon's far side explodes. This is an event which will knock the Moon out of orbit. It will send the 311 inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, hurtling uncontrollably into space.

"Space: 1999" was the last production by the partnership of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. It was the most expensive series produced for British television up to that time. The series was able to produce 48 episodes before it ended.
