'New Year's Day' is a song from the Irish rock band U2's 1983 album 'War', and the band's first UK hit single, peaking at number 10. It was also their first single to appear on international charts, reaching number 9 in Norway, 11 in the Netherlands, 17 in Sweden and 53 in the US. The song's lyrics focus on the Polish Solidarity movement, the country's first anti-Communist trade union.

Speaking about the song, the lead vocalist Bono said, "I think the fact that 'New Year's Day' made the Top Ten indicated a disillusionment among record buyers." The song and subsequent music video drew attention to the Communist control in Poland, which until then, many people knew very little about. U2's video features footage of Soviet troops advancing in winter during World War II. Twenty years later, U2 allowed the European Commission to use the song in a video about the transformation of Poland over the past two decades.

U2 is an Irish rock band formed of four members: lead singer Bono (born Paul David Hewson, 1960), lead guitarist The Edge (born David Howell Evans, 1961), bassist Adam Clayton (born 1960), and drummer Larry Mullen Jr (born 1961). As of 2021, U2 have sold more than 170 million albums and have won 22 Grammy Awards.
