It is a hard, brittle, bluish-white transition metal in the platinum group that is found as a trace element in alloys, mostly in platinum ores. Osmium is the densest naturally occurring element, with a density of 22.59 g/cm3. Its alloys with platinum, iridium, and other platinum group metals are employed in fountain pen nibs, electrical contacts, and other applications where extreme durability and hardness are needed.

I learned this from the show Fringe. The FBI goes to a mental hospital to get a scientist that's been there for almost 20 years to deal with bizarre and impossible crimes. This time, the "mad scientist" is the hero not the villain!

There are two chemical elements with claims to the title of "most dense element." They are osmium and iridium. Under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure, osmium is the element with the highest density. Its density is 22.59 g/cm3. At high pressure, iridium becomes the densest element, with a density of 22.75 g/cm3. The question wasn't specific enough about the pressure.
