Which is the longest bridge over water in the U.S.?
Opened in 1956 — a second span was finished in 1969 — the causeway held the record for decades as the world's longest bridge over water until China's Jiaozhou Bay Bridge opened in June 2011. Causeway officials were quick to point out that bridge's length includes several ramps and other features that shouldn't count, and after petitioning the Guinness Book of World Records, a new category was added: “Longest Bridge Over Water (Continuous)." The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway holds that record, at 23.87 miles. It remains a popular draw for New Orleans tourists who want to drive across the world's longest bridge — even if that statement must now be qualified.

We traveled across when they were putting up the second span. Scary as hell to get to the halfway point with nothing but water as far as the eye can see and see a sign reading "Detour ahead"!!

I was on that bridge with very dark clouds. Very scary.

When it's foggy, the Causeway's traffic is restricted to one lane and or closed. It's scary seeing water sprouts during bad weather.

Techinitly a "Causeway" is not a bridge. it is a road in several segments which are connected by bridges.

I used to commute over this bridge so I know it well. The worst times are in fog - if they haven't closed it, and when the salt flies are spawning (and splattering all over your windshield).

Never been there, but know Lake Pontchartrain is probably wider than the Chesapeake Bay where the bridge crosses that body of water. Have been across it. So got it right.

I've driven over this bridge a few times, it's actually a nice drive except when you get caught behind a wreck. The scenery is quite beautiful....

Have driven across it many times. As you drive along with your Windows down you can hear the natural gas bubbles coming up out of the water. It sounds AWESOME!

I went over this bridge driving from FL to TX. They had signs warning people that they were approaching the last gas exit before the span. It was pretty funny watching as everyone made that last minute decision to top off!
