The Emperor's Birthday is a national Japanese holiday. It is celebrated each year and the date is obviously determined by the currently reigning Emperor's birthday as Emperor Akihito was born on the 23rd of December, 1933.

During the reign of the preceding Emperor Hirohito, the day was observed on the 29th of April. Actually, the date still remains a public holiday, even though it was posthumously renamed Greenery Day in 1989 and Shōwa Day in 2007.

A public ceremony takes place at the Imperial Palace on the 23rd of December.
