"Howards End" is a movie that concerns a rich British family scheming to cut an interloper out of the mother's will. It is a 1992 romantic drama which is based upon the novel 'Howards End' (1910) by E. M. Forster. The novel is a story of class relations in turn-of-the-20th-century Britain. The film was produced by Ismail Merchant and Merchant Ivory Productions as their third adaptation of a Forster novel, following 'A Room with a View' (1985) and 'Maurice' (1987). "Howards End" was the 1st film to be released by Sony Pictures Classics. The film's screenplay was written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. James Ivory directed the film.

In this film, Helen Schlegel (Helena Bonham Carter) falls for Paul Wilcox (Joseph Bennett). Helen is completely rebuffed. Her sister Margaret (Emma Thompson) becomes friends with Paul's mother, Ruth Wilcox (Vanessa Redgrave), who promises her the family house, Howards End. Unfortunately, after Ruth's death, the will disappears and it appears the inheritance will also disappear. Until the widower, Henry Wilcox (Anthony Hopkins), becomes attracted to Margaret.
