One Hollywood movie that does not have scenes shot in Big Bend National Park in Texas is " The Deer Hunter" (1978). This is an American epic war drama film which was co-written and directed by Michael Cimino. It is about a trio of steelworkers (Americans of Russian origin) whose lives are changed forever after they join in the Vietnam War. This was the first feature film depicting the Vietnam War to be filmed on location in Thailand. All scenes were shot on location (no sound stages). "There was discussion about shooting the film on a backlot, but the material demanded more realism." This idea by the producer Barry Spikings was allowed to rule.

The film's story lets us know that in 1968, Michael (Robert De Niro), Nick (Christopher Walken) and Steven (John Savage), lifelong friends from a working-class Pennsylvania steel town, prepare to ship out overseas following Steven's elaborate wedding and one final group hunting trip. In Vietnam, their dreams of military honor are quickly shattered by the inhumanities of war. The guys here who survive are haunted by the experience, as is Nick's hometown sweetheart, Linda (Meryl Streep).

At the end of 2014's Oscar-nominated movie "Boyhood", famously shot over 12 years, the boy of the title, as a young man, is seen hiking a canyon in Big Bend National Park, Texas. The Texas national park is also represented in "Paris, Texas" (1984) and "No Country for Old Men" (2007).
