‘Doctor Zhivago” is the title of a novel by Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) who was a Russian poet, novelist, and literary translator. The novel takes place between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and the Second World War.

In 1965, the film by the same name was directed by David Lean (1908-1991). It spanned WWI (1914-1918) and the Russian Civil War of 1918-1922. While immensely popular in the West, the book was banned in the Soviet Union for decades. As a result, the film could not be made there and was instead filmed mostly in Spain.

The film stars Omar Sharif (1932-2015), an Egyptian actor who played the role of a married physician whose life is altered by the Russian Revolution and subsequent Civil War. Julie Christie (born 1940) is a British actress who plays the role of his love interest.

At the 38th Academy Awards, the film won 5 Oscar’s: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design. As of 2016, it is the 8th highest-grossing film of all time in the United States and Canada, adjusted for ticket-price inflation.

Sharif began his career in his native country in 1954 and has appeared in over 100 films spanning 50 years. He spoke 5 languages including Arabic, English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Julie Christie is the recipient of numerous accolades and has been active in films from 1957 to 2012. After a 6 year hiatus, in 2018 she narrated the film ‘The Bookshop’.
