The Sumatran elephant is one of three recognized subspecies of the Asian elephant. They are native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Currently there are between 2,400-2,800 Sumatran elephants left in existence. For this reason, Sumatran elephants are protected under Indonesian law.

In 2011, the Sumatran elephant became classified as 'critically endangered' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as the population has declined by at least 80% over the last three generations.

The main reasons for this species to be under its current category are due to habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation, and poaching.
