Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner (Sting) is an English musician and actor. He was the principal songwriter, lead singer, and bassist for the new wave rock band the Police from 1977 to 1984, and launched a solo career in 1985.

He has received 4 nominations for the Academy Award for Best Original Song without being successful. He was nominated for "My Funny Friend and Me" from The Emperor's New Groove in 2000, "Until" from Kate and Leopold in 2001, "You Will Be My Ain True Love" from Cold Mountain with Alison Krauss in 2003 and "The Empty Chair" from Jim: The James Foley Story in 2016.
