The first known recipe for a chocolate chip cookie appeared in chef Ruth Wakefield’s cookbook, "Tried and True,” in 1938. At the time, Ruth and her husband Kenneth ran a restaurant called 'Toll House' in Whitman, Massachusetts. The place was successful by all accounts, but it skyrocketed in popularity thanks to the near-instantaneous success of the chocolate chip cookie. The treat was quickly featured on a radio show hosted by Marjorie Husted, who was the voice and writer behind the 'Betty Crocker' personality for decades. In 1939, Wakefield allowed 'Nestle' to use both her recipe and the 'Toll House' name, allegedly for the cost of $1 and a lifetime supply of free chocolate.
