The term child actor or child actress is generally applied to a child acting on stage or in movies or television. It may also refer to an adult who began his/her acting career as a child. To avoid confusion, the latter is also called a former child actor. Based upon his career, Richard Gere (b. August 31,1949) was never a child actor. Gere is an American actor who began acting in films in the 1970s. He had a supporting role in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar", a 1977 American crime drama. He next got a starring role besides Brooke Adams in "Days of Heaven", a 1978 American romantic period drama film. He finally came to prominence with his role in the 1980 neo-noir crime drama "American Gigolo", which established him as a leading man and a sex symbol.

Now working in the 21st century, Gere's many prior films include "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982)," The Cotton Club" (1984), "Pretty Woman" (1990), "Sommersby" (1993), "Primal Fear" (1996), "Runaway Bride" (1999), "I'm Not There" (2007), "Arbitrage" (2012), "Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer" (2016), and "Three Christs" (2017).

In terms of career accolades, Gere won a Golden Globe Award for portraying Billy Flynn in the 2002 satirical musical black comedy crime film "Chicago"; he also got a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the cast.
