Books by Pat Conroy that have been made into major motion pictures include "The Great Santini" (1976), "The Lords of Discipline" (1980), and "The Prince of Tides" (1986). "My Losing Season" (2002) is a memoir written by Pat Conroy. It primarily deals with his senior 1966–67 college season as the starting point guard on the basketball team for The Citadel, a public senior military college in Charleston, South Carolina, established in 1842.

In his book, Conroy describes his tumultuous relationship with his coach, Mel Thompson, as well as the harsh, malevolent, male-dominated society of The Citadel. Conroy tells a personal story by using flashbacks, going back to his rough childhood where he remembers growing up with a tough father. He describes one memory when his mother tried to stab his father with a butcher knife. His father at that point backhanded his mother and started laughing.

The book also deals with the team's experience of losing. In his final season with the team, Conroy and the other members of the basketball team finished with an 8–17 record. The book is consequently full of emotional honesty. It sings the praises of losing, losing, and losing again. Public opinion now mostly indicates that it would be a theatrical and commercial success as a film.

"The Great Santini', "The Lords of Discipline", and "The Prince of Tides" were made into films in 1979, 1983, and 1991 respectively. "The Prince of Tides" and "The Great Santini" were Oscar nominated films.
