The 2007 film "Lions for Lambs" is an American war drama that was directed by Robert Redford about the connection between a platoon of United States soldiers in Afghanistan, a U.S. senator, a reporter, and a Californian college professor. It was produced by Redford, Matthew Michael Carnahan, Tracy Falco, and Andrew Hauptman. The screenplay was also written by Carnahan. The film's top stars are Redford, Tom Cruise, and Meryl Streep. It was the first Cruise/Wagner Productions film since the company joined with United Artists subsequent to Cruise's falling out with Paramount Pictures in 2006. Tom Clancy, known for his technically detailed espionage and military-science film storylines, had no participation in any way with the production of "Lions for Lambs".

"The Hunt for Red October", a 1990 American submarine spy thriller film directed by John McTiernan, "Clear and Present Danger", a 1994 action thriller film directed by Phillip Noyce, and "The Sum of All Fears", a 2002 American spy thriller film, directed by Phil Alden Robinson, are all based on novels by Clancy. Respectively, the novels "The Hunt for Red October" (1984), "Clear and Present Danger" (1989), and "The Sum of All Fears" (1991) were each a film adaptation that became very popular major motion picture.
