Catherine Cookson (1906-1998) was a phenomenally popular British writer of romantic and historical fiction. She came from a very humble background herself, born into poverty in South Shields in North East England, and leaving school at 14. This area, often known colloquially as "Geordieland" was the setting for much, although not all, of her fiction. She was prodigiously prolific, and wrote over 100 books, using both her own name and aliases.

The Mallen trilogy, originally published in the 1970s, consists of "The Mallen Streak", "The Mallen Girl" and "The Mallen Litter". When it was televised, there was also a series called "The Mallen Curse".

The stories concentrate on the tempestuous history of the Mallen family in the 19th century, beginning with the ruthless squire Thomas Mallen. The family have a distinctive white streak in their hair, the eponymous "Mallen Streak" of the title. They are not the happiest of families and work their way through three volumes of incest, illegitimacy, rape, plunder, mistaken identity, and simmering resentment.

In a possible case of art mirroring life, one of the main characters, Barbara, is deaf, as was Catherine Cookson herself in later life.
