The Hoba is the largest known meteorite as a single piece. The main mass is estimated at more than 60 tonnes, which has never been moved from where it fell. It is about twice as massive as either the Cape York meteorite's 31-tonne in Manhattan or the Campo del Cielo's 31-tonne in Argentina. All are iron meteorites and the Hoba is the most massive naturally occurring piece of iron known on Earth's surface. The name ''Hoba'' comes from the word of Khoekhoe language of South Africa meaning ''gift''.

It is inferred that the Earth's atmosphere slowed the object Hoba at the maximum velocity (terminal velocity) through air, thereby remaining ''intact'' and causing little expulsion of earth. This meteorite is composed of about 84% iron and 16% nickel, with traces of cobalt. The government of Namibia on March 15,1955, declared the Hoba meteorite to be a national monument. Following donation to the government in 1987 a visitor centre was constructed with a circular stone access and seating area for educational purposes. The discovery of the meteorite was a chance event. In 1920, the owner of the land Jacobus Hermanus Brits encountered the object while ploughing his field. Mr Brits identified and described a report which was published and can be viewed at the Grootfontein Museum in Namibia.
