Agnes Forder, The second paragraph is saying that the matronymic name is a name that is not exactly the mother's name. A matriname is the mother's exact name. I checked the reference article. A beautiful example of using a matonymic name is in a Jewish prayer for the safety of an individual. People plead to YHWH using Joseph ben Miriam, Joseph son of Miriam/Mary, or Sarah ben Miriam. Some other Jewish names are Rochlin, from Rachel, and Sorkin, from Sarah. The article discusses other countries and the use of names like the mothers' names, as well.
