Dolph Lundgren was not a bodybuilder before becoming a successful actor. Hans Lundgren, better known as Dolph Lundgren (b. November 3, 1957), is a Swedish actor, filmmaker, and martial artist. His breakthrough as an actor came in 1985, when he starred in "Rocky IV" as the imposing Soviet boxer Ivan Drago. Since 1985, he has starred in more than 80 films, almost all of them in the action genre.

Early in his life, Lundgren developed an interest in music and the fine arts. He did however decide to follow in his father's footsteps and pursue an Engineering degree. After having completed military service, he enrolled at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.

It was in the military when he first came in contact with martial arts. Five years later, he had become a world-class competitor in Japanese Karate. He became deeply involved in this particular discipline and many of its nuances.

While he studying in the United States and abroad on various academic scholarships, he attended Washington State University and Clemson University in South Carolina, USA. In 1982, he received a scholarship to complete his Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Sydney, Australia. In 1983, he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, one of the world's best engineering schools.

However, that same year, he decided to move to New York City, New York and take up acting.
