The River Tay, famous for its salmon fishing, lies in the heart of Scotland; it is the longest river in the country and its largest river in terms of flow. The Tay originates in in the southern Highlands on the slopes of Ben Lui near the west coast; it then flows easterly across the Highlands, through Loch Dochart, Loch Iubhair and Loch Tay and continues east through Strathtay, in the centre of Scotland. It then flows southeasterly toward the Firth of Tay on the east coast of Scotland.

Dunkeld, "fort of the Caledonians," is a historic cathedral city on the north bank of the River Tay, opposite Birnam and about 25 kilometres (15 miles) north of Perth.

Perth, the largest city on the river Tay, became known as a 'capital' of Scotland due to the frequent residence there of the royal court.

Dundee is Scotland's fourth-largest city and lies within the eastern central Lowlands on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, which feeds into the North Sea.

However, Stirling -- a city in central Scotland – does not lie on the Tay, but is located on the River Forth.
