"Star Trek" is a U.S. TV show that did not debut in black and white. Every episode of "Star Trek" from the pilot episode onward was seen in full color, unless the television set only operated in black and white. "Star Trek", which premiered in September, 1966, was cited as one of the reasons that people were going to buy a new color set for the 1966–1967 TV season. This series was cancelled in 1969.

After its cancellation, through reruns "Star Trek" became more popular and reached a much wider audience than when it had originally aired. Known as "trekkies" or "trekkers", the series' fans formed clubs and organized national conventions. In 1976, following another fan-organized letter-writing campaign, NASA named its first space shuttle orbiter, Enterprise, after the fictional starship from "Star Trek".
