The flag of Alaska consists of eight gold stars forming the 'Big Dipper' and 'Polaris' on a dark blue field. The 'Big Dipper' is a large asterism cosisting of seven bright stars of the constellation Ursa Major. The 'Polaris' commonly the North star or Pole star, is the brightest in the constellation of Ursa Minor. It can be located by extending an imaginary line through the front two stars of the asterism,viz., Merak and Dubhe.

The design was created by Benny Benson of Seward at the age of 13, who won a contest in 1927 to design the flag for the Territory of Alaska. In 2001, a survey conducted by the North American Vexillogical Association placed Alaska's flag fifth best in design quality.

The allegiance of USA with the 'Department of Alaska' (USA Army) were dated October 18,1867-July 3,1877 and to July 3,1890, using the present flag of USA in Alaska. The allegiance of USA with District of Alaska were dated July 4,1890- July 4,1912 and the allegiance of USA with Territorial Alaska was July 4, 1912-July 4 1927, using the present flag of USA in Alaska. Finally the allegiance of USA with Territorial State of Alaska was July, 1927- January, 1959, to present, using the present flag of Alaska, consists of eight gold stars.
