I guess you need to correct your information. The statue initially designed for the Suez Canal was quite different and the concept was different... I believe that is a bit of misinformation. The French certainly believe they gave it to us.

The French did give it to the U.S. There are 2 smaller "statues of liberty" in Paris, one overlooking the Seine.

He "Brushed Them Off" As Time Drew Near To The United States First Centennial In 1876, (With Artisans Practically Working "Double-Time" To Make The Deadline,) But Economic Hard Times And City Scandals Delayed The Building Of The Pedestal For The Statue For about Ten Years.

kleenoslo, The reference you provided says it was a joint effort by France & the USA. The Statue is known as "Liberty Enlightening The World." It was built specifically for the placement in New York harbor. The Franc built the Statue and the Americans provide the pedestal. It wasn't a left over piece of work and placed in New York. Maybe there's another story about Egypt not wanting a statue, but it isn't the same story about the Statue standing on Liberty (Bedloe) Island.

Your second paragraph is factually and historically incorrect! Why was this not caught during the review and approval of the question? The Suez Canal statue was a very different concept, and France did gift the statue to the US!
