A no-fly zone or no-flight zone is a territory or an area over which aircrafts are not permitted to fly. No-fly zone and anti-aircraft defences are sometimes set up in a civilian context. Civilian air exclusion zones are communicated in NOTAM, A notice to airmen.

Due to possible air attacks on the 2012 Olympic Games in London, many precautions were taken up there. The security preparations for the 2012 Summer Olympics was led by the police supported by the armed forces. This was the biggest security operation Britain had faced for decades. The surface-to-air missiles were sited around the Olympic stadium, similar to 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US.

There were six sites, four using Rapier, and two using Starstreak Fire units. The Rapier sites were: Blackheath Common, Oxleas Wood, William Girling Reservoir, Enfield and Barn Hill, Netherstone Farm, near Epping forest. Startreak missiles were at the top of tall buildings closer to the Olympic Stadium. From 14 July 2012 all protections began enforcing a 30-mile exclusion zone over London and other areas.
