Seabreeze High School (SHS) is located on a very long, narrow peninsula, closely parallel to the mainland with the Atlantic Ocean east and the Halifax River west. The latter is just one extension of the Intracoastal Waterway starting in Jacksonville, then becomes the Indian River North after flowing away from Daytona Beach (DB).

SHS is named for its location in the Seabreeze historic district, in turn named for a town DB annexed. Perhaps the two best-known alums of SHS are Greg and Duane Allman, the dual frontmen of the country-rock band Allman Brothers.

DB is not only dubbed 'Spring Break Capital of the World' and renowned for its Daytona 500 auto races, it also has the headquarters of NASCAR (National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing).

Calhoun High School is named for its county, of which Port Lavaca (PL) is the seat. The county in turn is named for John C. Calhoun, best known as Vice President to two presidents, John Quincy Adams (1825-1829) and Andrew Jackson (1829-1832).

PL's first European settlers were French (1685-1690), led by René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. However, the Spaniards regarded the French as intruders, then fought and chased them away. Still, a larger-than-life-sized statue of LaSalle overlooks the Gulf of Mexico from PL, between Houston and Galveston (northeast) and Corpus Christi (southwest).

PL's economy is primarily industrial, with plants for DuPont; Formosa Plastics; and ALCOA (Aluminum Corporation of America).
