The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. Their music incorporates elements of funk, punk rock and psychedelic rock. The band consists of vocalist Anthony Kiedis (11/1/1962), bassist Flea (Michael Peter Balzary, 10/16/1962), drummer Chad Smith (10/25/1961), and guitarist John Frusciante (3/5/1970).

With over 100 million records sold worldwide, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the best-selling bands of all time. They are the most successful band in the history of alternative rock, with records for the most number-one singles (13), most cumulative weeks at number one (85) and the most top ten songs (25) on the 'Billboard' Alternative Song chart. They have won six Grammy Awards, and in 2012 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The bands associated acts include What Is This?, Ataxia, the Mars Volta and Jane's Addiction. Their genres also include rap rock, funk metal, and alternative rock.

Their seventh album, "Californication" (1990), became their biggest commercial success, with 16 million copies sold worldwide. Their 2006 album, "Stadium Arcadium" was their first album to reach number one on the 'Billboard' 200 chart.

During their early career, the Chili Peppers would often perform nude, wearing only socks over their genitals; this became a part of their stage persona, and brought them early notoriety. They retired the tradition in 2000 as they approached their forties.
