Bohai Sea, approximately 78,000 km2 (30,000 sq mi), is a shallow northwestern arm of the Yellow Sea (connected via the Bohai Strait), off the northern coast of China.

The Huang He (Yellow River), China’s second longest river, discharges into the gulf. The gulf has long been a source of prawns and salt. There are both onshore and offshore petroleum deposits, and several oil refineries are located there as well as other industries. It contains significant oil and gas reserves, which provide much of China's offshore production.

The combination of oil spills and a growing economy due to the trade routes and ports in this area have caused extreme pollution. This pollution has also affected the water. It is thought that it has affected around 22% of the Bohai Seawater.

There are five major ports along the Bohai Sea rim with throughputs over 100 million tons.
