Which state was the first to recognize Christmas as an official holiday?
The first state to recognize Christmas as an official U.S. holiday was the state of Alabama in 1836. The holiday was an important seasonal event in the South but the Northern states considered the celebration as sinful.

Christie Myers, perhaps they were aware that most if not All of the activities associated with the 'celebration' were from pagan rites; even if they weren't aware that the date of the 'celebration' was completely erroneous.
