Stratford, a station in east London, has overtaken Waterloo as Britain’s busiest railway station in 2020-21. This is the first time Waterloo has not been the busiest station in 17 years.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, passenger numbers across Britain dropped by 78%, yet according to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), Stratford Station saw 14 million passengers between April 2020 and March 2021. By contrast, Waterloo only saw 12.2 million, making it Britain's fourth busiest station after Stratford, London Victoria and London Bridge. This was a significant drop from 86.9 million passengers in the 2019-20 period.

Stratford's success is largely to do with the pandemic but it is also a key interchange. The station is served by c2c (City to Coast) trains, Greater Anglia, London Overground and TfL (Transport for London) mainline services. It is also served by the London Underground.

Outside of the capital city, Britain's busiest station was Birmingham New Street with 7.4 million passengers.
