Malaria is a potentially fatal tropical disease that's caused by a parasite known as Plasmodium. The name of the disease comes from the Italian word mal'aria, meaning "bad air."

Classic symptoms include influenza-like symptoms such as fever, shivering, headaches, tiredness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, deep breathing, respiratory distressand, prostration and a whole range of other symptoms. In severe malaria the illness may evolve with a number of complications such as low blood pressure, kidney failure, possible haemorrhage, effects on the liver including infectious jaundice. Severe falciparum malaria can affect the brain and the rest of the central nervous system. It's characterized by changes in the level of consciousness, convulsions and paralysis. If a case shifts to fatal malaria, coma and associated failure of all the major organ systems occur.

Malaria is caused by the female Anopheles mosquito biting a person who has malaria parasites in their blood then passing these on when she takes her next feed on another person. The parasites develop in the intestine and salivary glands of the mosquito and can be passed on to other people the next time the mosquito bites. In humans, the parasite travels to the liver via the blood and then out into the bloodstream again, where it invades the red blood corpuscles where the parasites multiply.

Malaria can also be passed on other ways such as by blood transfusions and the use of infected needles.
