The organization Habitat for Humanity was founded in Americus, Georgia, in 1976, just about 10 miles from the Carters' home in Plains, Georgia, where they have lived since leaving the White House in 1981.

The 39th president told 'The Associated Press' that the couple’s marriage is “a full partnership”. The two met in Georgia when Carter was home from the US Navy Academy. Rosalynn was a family friend who already had a crush on the future Georgia governor and US president. They were married in July 1946, in Plains, GA.
