On 5 September 2021, President of Guinea Alpha Condé was captured by the country's armed forces in a coup d'état after gunfire in the capital, Conakry. There, soldiers claim to seize power from the President. The National Rally and Development Committee (CNRD) appeared on national TV claiming to have dissolved the government. An unverified video showed President Alpha Condè surrounded by soldiers. They said that Conde was not harmed, his wellbeing was guaranteed and he was being given access to his doctors. Outgoing ministers and heads of institutions were invited to a meeting on Monday morning in parliament.

It's the fourth attempted coup in West Africa in just over a year. There have been two military takeovers in Mali and a failed attempt in Niger since August 2020.

Conde won a third term in October after changing the constitution to allow him to stand again, triggering violent protests from the opposition. The soldiers said they had acted because of rampant corruption and poverty.

Guinea's natural resources are plentiful: in addition to its hydroelectric potential, Guinea possesses a large portion of the world’s bauxite reserves and significant amounts of iron, gold, and diamonds. Nonetheless, the economy is largely based on subsistence agriculture.
