Elizabeth I was the second of three legitimate children of King Henry VIII. The youngest child was Edward, who ascended to the throne first after his father's death, because he was the only male. After his death, the oldest of the children, Queen Mary was crowned. During her reign, she sought to stamp out protestants in the Kingdom, earning her the nickname, Bloody Mary. After Mary's Death, Elizabeth became Queen and restored England to the Protestant Church of England. She ruled for 51 years.

Queen Elizabeth I died without any heirs, ending the Tudor Dynasty, or the House of Tudor. Her closest living relative was the King of Scotland, King James V. King James became the King of England, the first to unite the two crowns, and create the United Kingdom. King James, being the first king of England to be named James, became King James I of England, and began the House of Stuart (sometimes spelled Stewart).
